I find that I add water less and less now. Sometimes it's straight out of forgetting to grab it and too lazy to get back up and get it. haha. I think there is something to say that whiskies are presented to you at a certain ABV for a reason. Almost like a chef seasoning his food. The blender deemed it to be best at that strength for a reason.

I'm in the same boat that I will get back up and grab some water if I can't put my finger on a note or frankly there just isn't anything there interesting enough to write down.

I also think there is something to say that I reach for different ABV level for different reasons. Sometimes I want something light and relaxing (42-46%). Sometimes I want to get punched in the face with a higher ABV dram.

Drink it if you got it, drink it how ya like it!

I was thinking about this last night. The other, and more important in my opinion, aspect is letting your whisky breath. This might be another topic all together. I have noticed such a huge difference between neck pours and even the second and third pours. I find when I pour a dram it's typically being drank straight away. I never really have the foresight to say, I'm going to want this dram in 20-30 minutes and pour it then.

It’s true. The first pour of a bottle is rarely my favorite, because the whisky feels tight, and I think it needs more time to breathe. Whisky does breathe, it just mostly ‘breathes out’ the chaotic elements and allows the more subtle flavors to show themselves (a romanticized version fo saying, volatility departs, and giving us room to taste the less volatile flavors).
